2. POLICY The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine is committed to the support of graduate medical education (GME) as part of the continuum of osteopathic medical education and the pathway to medical licensure for VCOM graduates.
3. PROCEDURES VCOM will support the growth and maintenance of GME through the following:
1. Provide a college-wide Division for GME with oversight by the Vice President for GME. 2. Provide an Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME for each campus whose duties, along with the clinical discipline chairs when appropriate, include: a. Provide general counseling in health careers to OMS 1 and OMS 2 students each year. b. Provide individual counseling to all students entering the OMS 4 year on residency selection, application, interviews, and preparation. c. Connect OMS 4 students with the Clinical Chairs for assistance with career choices and residency applications. d. Provide a residency career day for students each year, hosting residency programs for students to interact with. e. Serve as a liaison with all VCOM affiliated GME programs for their respective campus. f. Educate VCOM students on the development of credentials for acceptance into GME. g. Counsel students in developing and improving their academic CV across the years. h. Assist OMS 4 students having difficulty through the application process and/or with residency placement. i. Assure VCOM graduate placement into GME with a minimum of 85% first time match placement or above and 98% or greater final match placement. j. Maintain and utilize the residency placement database to assist students in connecting with alumni who have completed residency where students are applying. k. Provide a College-wide administrative support team to assist hospitals in developing new GME, to assist current GME hospital partners in maintaining GME approval, and to support hospitals in attaining osteopathic recognition. The team, at a minimum, includes: a. a Vice President for GME, b. an Assistant Vice President for Graduate Medical Education c. an Administrative Director for GME, d. four Associate Deans for OMS 4 and GME 4. Provide a College-wide GME Committee to guide and develop sustainable partnerships with GME programs by providing resources and support for VCOM affiliated hospitals, guiding the development of new GME programs, and encouraging and supporting existing programs to attain osteopathic recognition, to serve VCOM students now and in the future. 5. VCOM may serve as a sponsor or member of consortiums sponsoring GME. underserved areas in the Appalachian and Delta regions of the Southeast U.S. with residency placement into programs most likely to serve the rural and medically underserved areas where possible.
