HISTORY OF SUPPORT FOR GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION AND OPTI VCOM recognizes that osteopathic medical education is a continuum. Prior to 2008, in their first year of existence, VCOM began residency development as a member of AOPTIC; transitioning to being the primary supporter of an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accredited Osteopathic Post-Graduate Training Institute known as the Osteopathic Medical Network for Excellence in Education (OMNEE). Between 2008 and 2015, OMNEE worked with 12 VCOM affiliated hospital partners to develop 29 residency programs with approximately 400 residency position in seven specialties. In the following years, OMNEE expanded to serve as the OPTI for additional colleges of osteopathic medicine including Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine, Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Incarnate Word University School of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine. Through a collaboration with OMNEE, each COM within the OPTI carried their own responsibility for developing new residency positions to increase opportunities for their graduates. Following the announcement of the Single Accreditation System by the AOA, the OMNEE continued to function as an OPTI for four years, supporting the final programs transition to the ACGME. OMNEE was dissolved in 2020 and those employed under OMNEE assumed roles in the VCOM GME Division to provide support for the development and maintenance of GME in VCOM core hospitals.
