6. VCOM will actively support the development and maintenance in the following manner: a. Provide support to hospitals to develop new GME programs including but not limited to financial feasibility studies for GME and assistance in developing Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) sponsoring institution, program and osteopathic recognition applications, and education on how to comply with ACGME requirentments b. Periodically survey affiliated hospitals to seek input on the value of VCOM GME support services and identify opportunities for improvement and to ascertain interests in pursuing osteopathic recognition c. Routinely encourage hospitals with current ACGME accredited programs on the benefits of osteopathic recognition and to assist with the development and/or maintenance of osteopathic recognition where programs wish to pursue this recognition d. VCOM will support annual research days for scholarly activity with resident recognition awards and provide residents with research assistance. e. VCOM will financially and academically support an array of educational and research resources with collaborating GME programs. f. VCOM will offer opportunities for residents and faculty to participate in VCOM international mission trips. g. Assist core sites who have GME programs with academics including, where requested, curriculum, faculty development, and an online board prep program for residents. h. VCOM will continue efforts to develop new residencies where opportunities exist in the states of Virginia, North and South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana, and surrounding states in the Appalachian and Delta regions. 7. The VCOM GME Division will provide college-wide support for GME development. 4. DURATION OF POLICY The VCOM Policy for Planning and Promoting Graduate Medical Education is effective as of the date above and will remain effective until amended or terminated by the President, with approval by the Board of Directors.
