College service, clinical service, and administration. The faculty adequacy model is different based on the type of faculty hired.

VCOM considers 1,400 to 1,840 hours as full-time and part-time to be 1,400 hours or less (1,840 = 2000 hours minus holiday and vacation time).

3.1. Faculty Adequacy - Teaching VCOM provides time for teaching preparation including lecture development, questions, and recording on VCOM TV. Student to faculty ratio in laboratories is determined by the Discipline Chair in agreement with the Associate Deans and Campus Deans. The formulas used for teaching are: Lecture o Includes: lectures, classroom case presentation development and intro, etc. o 1 contact hour X 10 hours preparation  Laboratory o 1 contact hour X 3 hours preparation o Student to faculty ratio in laboratories is determined by the Discipline Chair in agreement with the Associate Deans and Campus Deans.  SGL o 1 contact hour X 10 hours development o 1 contact hour X 2 hours facilitation  Small Group Reviews o 1 contact hour X 2 hours of review 3.2. Faculty Adequacy – Service, Administrative Tasks, Clinical Responsibilities and Research In addition to the teaching time formulas above, VCOM also allocates time for service, administrative tasks, research, scholarly activity, and clinical responsibilities. The formulas used are: 

Service Time o



Faculty members have a minimum of ten percent (184 hours = .1 FTE) of dedicated time for service, such as college committees, student advising activities, and student functions.

Administrative Time o



Chairs, course directors and others with educational responsibilities are given administrative time, which varies by division and responsibilities. This time allocation ranges from 10-20 percent. For example, course directors are given five to ten percent of time depending on the course hours and complexity of the course. o Discipline Chair - .2 FTE = 368 hours

Research Time o



Educational, biomedical, or clinical research time is calculated on an individual basis and is based on faculty contract, individual research interests, prior success, and/or future potential. o Number of hours/1840 = % research time.
