VCOM Policy and Procedure

Policy #S009

o When conditions are such that students can participate in patient care with high risk being mitigated, and rotation opportunities remain limited, VCOM may support and arrange faculty supervised clinical experiences through medical outreach to rural and medically underserved populations in need of care. • The curriculum for each rotation must continue to include a continuation of online clinical case modules. • The schedule must assure students, between the third and fourth year collectively, complete the core rotations of family medicine, rural primary care, internal medicine, ob/gyn, surgery, and pediatrics in-person and allow the completion of medical and surgical selectives, psychiatry, and emergency medicine by a combination of telemedicine and simulation if they cannot be completed in-person. Rotation requirements may be moved across academic years to complete this process. • At a minimum, the family medicine, internal medicine, ob/gyn, pediatrics, surgery, and rural primary care rotations must have in-person patient care, where the student is directly involved in the care of the patient under supervision. In the event these cannot be provided in the third year, these rotations may be exchanged for fourth year rotation electives or selectives but must be taken before graduation. • During critical times when elective rotations are not possible, the Campus Dean and the Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME will determine the best plan for students to have residency exposure. This includes, but is not limited to: o Preparing students for online residency interviews, o Establishing videoconferencing opportunities for students with residency sites, o Allowing students to participate in virtual rotations with residencies, o Working with VCOM core hospitals with GME to assure both VCOM students and the core hospitals have the opportunity to develop a program where VCOM students may be seen by those sites and by which the VCOM affiliated residency sites are seen by VCOM students. 6. CLINICAL ASSIGNMENT PROCEDURES Students are assigned to their OMS 3 clinical education core site through a matching process that occurs a minimum of five months in advance of the start of the OMS 3 year. The process is directly overseen by the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, the Dean, and the Director for Clinical Rotations, with input from the DSME on available rotations. The match is not a lottery process but a match where students rank and provide a written reason for their top seven choices. Students who feel their circumstances meet criteria for hardship or special consideration may complete a separate form and provide necessary documentation. The Campus Dean may also designate a student as needing to
