ComprehensiveTesting: COMSAE Phase 1 To ensure that students achieve the medical knowledge competencies needed to begin the OMS 3 year and succeed on COMLEX Level 1, VCOM requires completion of a Comprehensive Review Course. This course culminates in the COMSAE Phase 1 exam, which serves as the final assessment at the end of the OMS 2 year. To be eligible to be promoted to the OMS 3 year, the student must pass the Comprehensive Review Course and sit for COMLEX Level 1. Students who do not pass the Comprehensive Review Course must follow a prescribed remediation plan as outlined in this section in order to be promoted to the OMS 3 year. VCOM covers the cost of the first COMSAE Phase 1 exam that students take as the final exam for the Block 8 Comprehensive Review Course. The college also pays for the second and third COMSAE Phase 1 exam if required for remediation. Each year, VCOM will notify students of the COMSAE forms they may purchase on their own to take as additional practice exams to prepare for their official COMSAE or COMLEX Level 1 exam. Students must only utilize the forms specified, as the other forms are utilized as the official COMSAE for the Comprehensive Review Course and as the remediation exam(s) if needed. NBOME logs the COMSAE exams taken, which allows VCOM to monitor the exams purchased by students to ensure that no COMSAEs that have been taken are utilized as a remediation exam(s). COMSAE Phase 1: First and Second Attempt • Students who score 460 or greater on COMSAE Phase 1 on the first or second attempt and who are scoring 65% or greater on all-topic, timed question sets of at least 25 questions in TrueLearn for a minimum of 2 weeks immediately prior to their scheduled COMLEX Level 1 exam will receive a “P” (Pass) grade for the Comprehensive Review Course (provided they have met all other course requirements) and will be allowed to sit for COMLEX Level 1 within the VCOM approved testing window . Once students pass COMSAE Phase 1 and meet the scoring requirements in TrueLearn, they are to continue to study until they take COMLEX Level 1 during the approved testing window. • Students who score 440 – 459 on COMSAE Phase 1 on the first or second attempt will receive/maintain an “IP” (In Progress) grade for the Comprehensive Review Course. This score range is considered a conditional pass, which indicates that the student needs to complete additional structured and monitored remediation before being released to sit for COMLEX Level 1. Of note, there is no conditional pass range for the third attempt of COMSAE Phase 1. To resolve the “IP” grade and be released to sit for COMLEX Level 1, the student is required to do the following: o Meet with the Center for Institutional, Faculty, and Student Success (CIFSS) to design a prescribed remediation plan, which may include attendance at a VCOM approved in-person external immersion program. The plan includes a tentative date the student is to sit for COMLEX Level 1. The length and details of the study plan will be based on each student’s individual progress. Students in this score range may choose to continue to follow a VCOM-directed study plan or may choose to attend an in-person external immersion program.
In order to be released to sit for COMLEX Level 1, the student must score 65% or greater on all-topic, timed question sets of at least 25 questions in TrueLearn for a minimum of 2 weeks immediately prior to their scheduled COMLEX Level 1 exam. Students must follow and complete a prescribed remediation plan as designed in order to be released to sit for COMLEX Level 1, which includes providing CIFSS with weekly updates regarding study plan progress and question bank performance.
