ACOI American College of Osteopathic Internists

T he American College of Osteopathic Internists (ACOI) gives students the ability to learn about the sub-specialties in internal medicine. Preparing students for successful careers in internal medicine, members are able to dive deeper into areas such as cardiology, endocrinology, and pulmonology with the help of VCOM faculty and guest lecturers. • On June 21, 2017, the American College of Osteopathic Internists (ACOI) at VCOM invited Kris Lehnhardt, MD, to discuss extreme environmental medicine, aerospace medicine, the challenges of providing medical care to patients in extreme environments. He also discussed hyperbaric, underwater and space medicine. Dr. Lehnhardt is the Deputy Scientist for Exploration Medical Capability at the NASA Johnson Space Center. He is also senior faculty with the Baylor College of Medicine.

• ACOI hosted their annual central line workshop on June 19, 2017. Megan Thomas, DO, and Peter Recupero, DO, taught students how to place central lines and use ultrasound equipment. The workshop helped students apply concepts from lecture to a patient model. • On September 8, 2017, ACOI hosted Brandon Langlinais, MD, for a workshop on reading and interpreting common findings on x-rays and CT scans.
