Focused on a Mission to Serve
DIXIE TOOKE-RAWLINS, DO, FACOFP
186 first-year medical students entered the VCOM-Virginia Class of 2021 during Orientation on August 6, 2017
T he Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) has three campuses with one common Mission: to graduate community-focused, globally- minded osteopathic physicians to meet the needs of rural and medically underserved populations. The Mission is the heart and soul of VCOM and is shared by our students and faculty. Within our Mission is a focus on the communities we serve. VCOM is committed to each individual community where we reside as well as to the region we serve. While VCOM is one of the largest medical schools in the country, each VCOM campus maintains the feel of a smaller private college and community. VCOM is producing the type of physician this country needs and is focused on making a difference in the communities and regions we serve.
2,023 physicians from 12 classes have graduated from VCOM-Virginia since 2007
VCOM is ranked # 2
for graduates receiving first choice of residency - 2018 U.S. News and World Report

A MESSAGE FROM THE VIRGINIA DEAN
Embracing the Mission of Service
JAN M. WILLCOX, DO, FACOFP
O u r Mission is to serve. Specifically, to medically serve rural and historically underserved regions and to conduct research and daily actions that enhance the health and healthcare in these areas. Our students recognize that this requires a commitment and focus during their time at VCOM and even more so when they leave VCOM to serve the broader community. Our dedication to service is manifested through the efforts of our entire VCOM family. It is a continuum of action that involves the medical contribution and guidance of our alumni, the daily conduct of our faculty and staff, and outreach into our local community to cultivate and nurture a sustainable generation of clinicians dedicated to providing quality healthcare to those who would otherwise remain, or become, medically underserved. Our first graduates began to establish their practices following residencies in 2010. In the eight years since, more than 100 alumni from the Virginia campus have returned to rural and underserved communities as practicing
physician preceptors for our third-and fourth-year students. Of Virginia campus Alumni Classes of 2007–2012, 55% of graduates have entered primary care practice and 66% first practiced in Appalachian counties or cities. students who are recipients of the Health Professions Scholarship Program. Upon graduation, these students enter residencies with the Department of Defense and commit to train with and treat our nation’s heroes in the Air Force, Army or Navy. Here they fulfill a unique service mission. We have established year- round clinics in the Dominican Republic, Honduras and El Salvador that provide our students with the opportunity to serve those in severe need. These sites provide experience for our students that mirrors the issues of those living in poverty without access to healthcare in any country in the world. Experienced, bilingual, in-country VCOM clinical faculty act as preceptors to our students in these settings providing culturally appropriate expertise. These VCOM clinics Each year we have a significant number of
allow us to make a continuous, sustainable impact in local communities through our partnerships. Since inception, VCOM has performed outreach to local area high school students, which has resulted in several of these same students progressing through college and becoming VCOM students. VCOM has also developed the Summer Enrichment Experience (SEE) program which promotes science and medicine to area high school students, allowing them to experience a week participating in medical school with medical student mentors. We hope not only to encourage these students to pursue careers in science and medicine but also to gain an appreciation of behaviors that are fundamental to healthy lifestyles. Those who have gone before have set the example of service by their leadership. Each day on campus our students have embraced this leadership and made it their own, and each day they strengthen the example for those who will enter VCOM and embrace the mission of service in the future.

JULY

SEPTEMBER
September brought Spirit Day to the VCOM campus, the Classes of 2020 and 2021 worked hard decorating their classrooms to impress Dean Willcox. While the competition was fierce and the decision tough, the Class of 2020 was the winner.
The 10th year of VCOM’s Summer Enrichment Experience (SEE) kicked off in July. With one week inviting boys from high schools across the region and the next girls, the students were able to get an up-close look at what a career in medicine can look like. Interactive lectures, hands-on labs and fun activities kept campers engaged and excited.
In August, the Class of 2021 became the newest faces at VCOM during their orientation. Students, faculty and staff were excited to welcome them into the VCOM family.

SEPTEMBER
OCTOBER
NOVEMBER
The Class of 2021 reached a major milestone in their medical careers in November at the White Coat Ceremony. VCOM faculty and staff, along with friends and family, gathered in Burruss Hall to watch them proudly receive their white coats.
After a hard-fought day of games, the Class of 2020 was victorious over the first-year students at the VCOM Olympics. They were awarded the 2017 Frank Rocovich Cup. Highlights from the day included the doughnut eating contest and tug-of-war.
In October, third-year students met with representatives from prospective clinical sites to talk about possible post-graduation plans at Hospital Day. Many residency programs brought familiar faces with many VCOM alumni coming to answer student questions.

FEBRUARY
MARCH
VCOM’s annual Via Research Recognition Day took place in February to showcase students, faculty and researchers throughout the region. Posters and presenters covering diverse topics in biomedical, educational and clinical research where presented and the top presenters awarded. Keynote speakers presented brand-new knowledge in their fields for attendees.
For the second-annual William G. Anderson, DO, Black History Month Series, hosted by the Student National Medical Association, Barbara Ross- Lee, DO, spoke to VCOM students. Her speech touched on many aspects of being a compassionate physician. Dr. Ross-Lee is the first black woman to serve as dean of a medical school in the United States.
Accepted Students Day in March offered brand-new VCOM students the opportunity to meet everyone at VCOM and learn in-depth information about their new school. The event gave them the chance to get to know Blacksburg and begin planning for their first year of medical school.
The Class of 2018 found out where they would be going to residencies on February 5th for those with osteopathic matches and March 19th for allopathic matches. Seeing the lists were an exciting start to a new chapter. Proudly, living out the Mission, many students chose primary care residencies!

APRIL
MAY
In April, VCOM’s Emergency Medicine faculty hosted Disaster Simulation Day for students. Triage practice, a vehicle extrication by local EMS, HAZMAT demonstrations and an emergency helicopter landing let students keep up close to disaster procedures. Throughout the day, students were able to play the parts of victims and doctors, as they learned critical skills for catastrophic situations.
The Health Professions Scholarship Program graduated four new officers at the Military Promotion Ceremony. On May 4, 2018, the graduates took the oath of office, received their promotion pins, and were honored for their commitment to serve in the United States Military. J. Thomas Hardy, DO, Colonel, US Army, who serves as Chief of Staff at the Dayton VA Medical Center, was the guest speaker.
VCOM-Virginia’s Commencement Ceremony took place on May 5, 2018 in Burruss Hall on Virginia Tech’s campus. One-hundred eighty-two new physicians were welcomed into the VCOM’s alumni family! Stephen Shannon, DO, President and CEO of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine gave the commencement speech.
To round-out the school year, 27 fourth-year students were inducted into VCOM’s inaugural Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS). The society recognizes students who display compassionate patient care and are role models for others. Members are now responsible for carrying out projects to promote humanism in medicine.
