ACOEP American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians

T he American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP) supports students that plan to enter the field of emergency medicine. The organization allows students to learn more about the necessary skills and procedures to be a successful emergency room physician. ACOEP gives students resources through their national chapter and hosts time with current emergency physicians. • James Powers, DO, former chair of Emergency Medicine at VCOM, presented a lecture to ACOEP about different types of snakes and what to do if bitten. Students learned how to recognize and avoid venomous snakes, what to do in the minutes following a bite, and about the medications used at hospitals to help prevent further damage from snake bites. • ACOEP hosted an intubation workshop to make members more confident in their ability to manage an airway in emergency

conditions. This event was kicked off with Eric Stanley, DO, emergency physician and ACOEP student organization advisor, giving a lecture about airway management. Students learned how to intubate using the SIM center and through demonstrations on cadavers. • Continuing a long tradition, ACOEP provided students the opportunity to review their Basic Life Support certification. This year, under the direction of Cynthia Leaf, CPR courses were provided using a hybrid platform, consisting of an online module followed by a skills check-off. • The Wilderness Medicine subcommittee hosted Dr. Stephanic Lareau, MD, director of the Wilderness Medicine Fellowship at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, to lecture on how to be medically prepared for avalanches and frostbite.
