SAAO Student American Academy of Osteopathy

T he Student American Academy of Osteopathy (SAAO) at VCOM encourages students to use the skills that set them apart as DOs. SAAO helps members master OMM techniques and promotes its usage. • On September 6, 2017, SAAO collaborated with SAACOFP to provided OMM treatments to standardized patients at SP Appreciation Day. • SAAO hosted a free OMM treatment tent at the local Blacksburg Farmer’s Market. Over the 5-hour period of running the booth, 34 people were treated. • Partnering with VRHA and other VCOM student organizations, the SAAO provided OMM treatments for attendees of the Franklin Heights Baptist Church Health Fair in Rocky Mount, VA. This medical outreach

program provided services to numerous individuals and allowed student volunteers the chance to practice OMT skills learned in classes and labs. • Lauren Leslie, DO, one of VCOM’s Sports Medicine fellows, led students through an hour-long workshop where she demonstrated different OMT modifications and handling techniques that small-framed physicians can utilize when working with larger individuals.
