10 Ms. Andrea Mickle, President and CEO of Minority Access, Inc., a nonprofit organization committed to increasing diversity, decreasing disparities, and reducing incidences of environmental injustices, shared her experiences, and inspired students during the inaugural William G. Anderson, DO, Black History Month Series. She spoke about the barriers she faced in her life such as being the first black student in an all- white high school, health problems and other societal barriers. 11 On March 1, 2017, VCOM welcomed the next class of first-year students at Accepted Students Day. Here the students were able to learn about VCOM in-depth and meet their new classmates. This event gave new VCOM students the chance to get to know Blacksburg and make plans for the new school year. 12 J.D. Polk, DO, was a guest speaker at VCOM as part of the Leading Global Health lecture series. Dr. Polk is Chief Health and Medical Officer at the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He spoke to the students about NASA’s medical research, how doctors work with astronauts, and the effects of space travel on the human body.
