RESEARCH

experienced in serving as NIH reviewers scored and discussed the three proposals.

To encourage collaboration and to allow researchers to share their ideas and current research, faculty “5/5/5” presentations were introduced at this retreat. The “5/5/5” presentations consisted of five-minute discussions of five slides on current research and then up to five questions or suggestions from the audience. Eighteen faculty members presented during these sessions, and each of VCOM’s three campuses were well represented. Response from the faculty has been very positive, and the Research Division is planning to continue this program at future retreats. Faculty also brought research posters, which were on display during the Friday evening opening reception and the Saturday lunch. Keynote speakers were Stephan Duma, PhD, Director of VT ICTAS; Harry C. Wyatt, Professor, VT-WFU School of Biomedical Engineering & Sciences and Michael Flynn, PhD, Director of Research, HCA South Atlantic. Dr. Duma gave a presentation on biomedical modeling of human systems, and Dr. Flynn presented on research collaboration with HCA graduate medical education (GME) programs. In addition, Van Hipp and John Winston from American Defense International (ADI) presented and met with faculty who wish to utilize ADI services and assistance in developing white papers. Fostering Year-Round Collaboration I n addition to the annual retreat, the Research Department offers bi-weekly video conference “Research Rounds,” which are overseen by Harold “Skip” Garner, PhD and his team. These meetings are open to VCOM researchers at all campuses to discuss research and receive help on project development. During these meetings, the researchers commonly present their developing proposals for comments and feedback. Faculty also discuss general research interests, and Dr. Garner leads discussions that engender collaborative ideas between campuses. ■
