Research A Flourishing Approach to Physician Formation: Enhancing Medical Education and Combating Provider Burnout by Brittany Lilla

W illiam Pearson, PhD, discipline chair for anatomy at VCOM-Auburn, is doing innovative research designed to enhance the education of future physicians. Funded by the Kern National Network for Flourishing in Medicine (KNN), the “Flourishing Approach to Physician Formation” program aims to foster the development of character, empathy and practical wisdom in medical students. By focusing on holistic growth, the program seeks to produce physicians who are not only technically proficient, but also deeply empathetic and morally grounded. A key component of this initiative is transforming anatomy education. The program enhances the learning experience by integrating elements that

promote a deeper understanding of the human body while encouraging compassion. This approach enriches students’ comprehension and appreciation of anatomical complexities, fostering a more holistic perspective on medical practice. The program also establishes learning communities for preclinical students. These communities provide a supportive network where students can collaborate and grow personally and professionally. These communities offer a space for sharing experiences, challenges and successes, thereby promoting a culture of empathy and teamwork. By fostering a sense of community and mutual support, the program enhances students’ engagement and resilience during the demanding preclinical years.
