Context: Sepsis remains one of the leading causes of mortality in the hospital. With increasing incidence rates and the high mortality rate of this diagnosis, rapid and accurate therapy are paramount. Traditional static educational modalities are still the predominant form of education but with shortened goal durations for identification and proper treatment of sepsis outlined in the Surviving sepsis campaign guidelines. Dynamic, interactive educational modalities could prove more useful. Objective: To determine whether dynamic educational modalities are more effective than traditional didactics in adherence and execution of the “HOUR ONE” bundle/algorithm outlined in the 2021 Surviving Sepsis Campaign’s guidelines. Methods: Our study was a prospective intervention type. Our intervention was a Sepsis Simulation in which a sample 18 nurses from multiple departments at our hospital was administered. Preliminary data was gathered using a Pre/Post-test based on the “HOUR ONE” bundle and Sepsis treatment algorithm. Our prospective data will be gathered 3 months out from our start date of simulations and be used to provide more real-world data of the effectiveness of the intervention.

Results: The pre-test average was 7.1 with a standard deviation of 1.5 and the Post-test average was 8.7 with a standard deviation of 0.6. A paired-t test was undertaken to examine if the difference was statistically significant. Results of the paired-t test indicated that there is a significant large difference between Before and After, t (17) = 4.8, p < .001. Conclusion: Our study shows that a dynamic learning model leads to improved adherence and execution of the “HOUR ONE” bundle outlined in the Surviving Sepsis Campaign 2021 guidelines.
