Policy #S009
All physicians who provide core and required rotations to VCOM students are appointed and credentialed as clinical faculty by the VCOM Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee. All physicians serving as clinical faculty hold contracts directly with the College or their contractual obligations with VCOM may fall under the hospital employer when VCOM holds the agreement with the hospital. The contract outlines the duties of the clinical faculty member for such reimbursement. A database for clinical faculty 5. ASSURING CLINICAL ROTATIONS AND CLINICAL CAPACITY VCOM assures that the required affiliation agreements and clinical faculty are in place to provide a minimum of 110% capacity for all core and required rotations at each VCOM campus. This capacity also includes the assurance that each student participates in at least one third year rotation in a health care setting in which the student works with resident physicians currently enrolled in an accredited program of graduate medical education. VCOM also requires that students complete at least one third year rotation under the supervision of an osteopathic physician and a minimum of two third year rotations in an inpatient setting. This responsibility begins with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs who works with the DSME to assure each clinical education core site contains the required clinical rotation experiences to deliver the curriculum. Each year the Clinical Chairs are responsible to meet with clinical faculty in-person (or if > 6 hours away from campus via videoconferencing) to review with the clinical faculty the students who rotated with them (in aggregate) performance on boards, performance on end-of-rotation exams, and patient encounter logs by condition. The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs meets with the DSME in-person in the core site facility to review the program and assess capacity. After the sites utilized in the prior year are evaluated by the students, Clinical Chairs, and the Associate Dean, an annual review of the evaluations is conducted by the Dean, Associate Deans, and the Directors of Clinical Rotations prior to making the new list of potential core site assignments for students in the upcoming year. 5.1 Clinical Education Core Site Closures As stated above, VCOM assures the clinical rotations exist for every student including excess clinical capacity in their clinical education core sites to support 110% or greater of the core and required clinical rotations. Infrequently, an entire site may close or no longer provide clinical education. This may occur when a hospital is sold, when the hospital selects a new academic partner, or following a disaster that has damaged the hospital. When this occurs, VCOM will: • First, attempt to place the students in a VCOM clinical education core site closest to the original assigned site as possible, overseen by their campus. • Second, attempt to place the students in a VCOM clinical education core site of another campus with excess capacity.
