4. CREDIT HOUR DETERMINATION - CLINICAL CURRICULUM

Four credit hours are awarded for the approximate 160-180 contact hours students spend on each four week required clinical rotation. The contact hours awarded on a clinical rotation are estimated to have a 1 to 1 ratio as preparation for the study is usually spent while on the rotation. Therefore, the following formula is used in the clinical setting: Credits Awarded Minimum Instructional Contact Time per Week 1 40 hours instruction per week x 1 week = 40 hours instruction 2 40 hours instruction per week x 2 weeks = 80 hours instruction 3 40 hours instruction per week x 3 weeks = 120 hours instruction 4 40 hours instruction per week x 4 weeks = 160 hours instruction During third-year core clinical rotations and the fourth-year emergency medicine rotation, students are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of clinical modules related to the rotation. Each case module and/or reading assignment module requires approximately 1 hour to complete. The modules are assessed through an end-of-rotation exam. Therefore, the clinical rotation module component for each rotation is awarded 1 credit hour. Osteopathic principles and practices are integrated into each required rotation in the OMS 3 year. These additional modules are to be completed during each rotation. There are fifteen modules that are anticipated to be completed, requiring 2 hours of study each or 45 contact hours. The student is; therefore, awarded 2 credit hours for the OMM modules curriculum. Students must also attend an OMM workshop at the conclusion of each rotation where students continue to practice their skills under supervision and to relate treatment to the clinical rotation they have completed. DURATION OF POLICY The VCOM Credit Hour Policy established by the Administration, Medical Education, and Clinical Affairs is effective as of the date above and shall remain effective until amended or terminated by the President and Provost. 5.
