Policy #S004

Unprofessional, unethical, or inappropriate behavior for a medical student and future physician may be reported to the College by VCOM officers, administration, faculty, staff, patients, employees at affiliated institutions, or other sources. Medical students who fail to meet College professional and ethical expectations may be subject to review, potential disciplinary action where relevant, and possible dismissal from VCOM. 2.1. Additional Consultation and/or Treatment The Professional and Ethical Standards Board (PESB) and/or Campus Dean may require medical or psychiatric consultation and treatment, or other consultations as approved by the Campus Dean in the consideration of disciplinary sanctions. 2.2 Reprimand A reprimand is a written letter from the Campus Dean to a student for misconduct that is found to be a minor offense. When warranted, VCOM officers can request, in writing to the Campus Dean that a reprimand letter be sent to a student. A reprimand letter is kept confidential to the student’s file unless further unprofessional, unethical, or inappropriate behavior occurs, at which time it becomes part of the student’s permanent record. 2.3 Disciplinary Probation Disciplinary probation is a written disciplinary status that a student’s behavior has been judged inappropriate. If further problems occur, more serious disciplinary action will be taken and may include dismissal. A student placed on disciplinary probation will be monitored for a minimum of one year and the timeframe may be extended through graduation depending on the offense. Probation status is imposed by the Campus Dean upon recommendation of a three-person panel, PESB, and/or a referral from the Honor Code Council or Promotion Board. With certain behavioral probations, additional conditions, including ongoing medical or psychiatric treatment or other requirements may be necessary in an attempt to remedy the misconduct and prevent its recurrence. Students will be allowed to continue classes while on probation. 2.4 Disciplinary Suspension Disciplinary suspension is defined as a temporary separation from the institution that is involuntary and is initiated by the Campus Dean for behavioral reasons. The duration and terms of the suspension will be determined by the Campus Dean and may include requirements and/or recommendations set forth the Promotion Board, Honor Code Council, or the PESB. Students on suspension are not eligible to receive Title IV funding. Students on suspension are not allowed to participate in activities of the College. With certain behavioral suspensions, additional conditions including ongoing medical or psychiatric treatment, or other requirements may be necessary in an attempt to remedy the misconduct and prevent its recurrence. If the terms set out under the suspension are not fulfilled, the student will be dismissed from VCOM without the ability to apply for re-admission. 2.5 Emergency Mandatory Suspension The Campus Dean (or designee) has the authority to initiate mandatory temporary suspension for VCOM students.
