Even though a software is included in the “approved” listing above, the necessary license(s) must exist or be purchased in order for the software to be legally installed on any VCOM-owned computer equipment. Please contact the appropriate campus Information Technology Office for more information on software licenses. When economically feasible, software licenses will be purchased for VCOM through the IT department. Software requests for VCOM’s academic labs, which fall within the approved budget, will be reviewed by the specific department officer and approved by the Director of IT. Any software that is installed on VCOM’s servers, must first be approved the Director of IT and installed only by the Information Technology staff. 2.3 Minimum Standards for Software When purchasing computer workstations and laptops outside of the equipment provided by VCOM, the following software must be installed. a. Operating system for workstation/laptop machines is Windows 7 Professional. b. Microsoft Office Professional Education, current version, is VCOM’s approved office application. c. Symantec Endpoint Protection is VCOM’s approved virus protection software. d. Microsoft Outlook is the only email application supported by VCOM’s Information Technology staff. 2.4 Non-approved Software Software installed on VCOM computer equipment that are not on the Approved Software list (Section 2.2), or have not been reviewed and approved by the IT Department will not be supported and may be removed. 2.5 Purchasing Approval Process When a department determines that they need IT hardware and/or software that is not provided by VCOM, the following steps must be followed in order to successfully purchase the equipment/software. Dell is currently VCOM’s vendor of choice for computer workstations and laptops. a. Prior to submitting a purchase request for any computer system (desktop or laptop), software or other IT related equipment to the Business Office, the purchasing department must first consult with the respective campus Information Technology staff to ensure that the system/equipment and/or software will function properly on VCOM’s network and with other IT related configurations. b. All requests for purchasing computer systems and related IT equipment will require the completion of VCOM’s purchase request form found at: http://www.vcom.vt.edu/humanresources/humanresources.html.
