VCOM Policy and Procedure

Policy #F006

VCOM requires faculty to use information from textbooks or literature that is peer reviewed, up-to-date, and accurate. For example, Wikipedia is not an appropriate source for academic content. Faculty members are responsible for adhering to copyright guidelines and the use of copied materials. The Fair Use Doctrine, as designated by Public Law 94-153, allows copying in certain instances without permission from or payment to the copyright owner. Under this law, it is fair use to reproduce copyrighted materials for purposes of criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. If a faculty member is not sure of the copyright guidelines pertaining to instructional materials they should consult the librarian. Educational materials and other intellectual property created as a part of a faculty member’s position at VCOM will be property of VCOM. 4. SUBMISSION OF PRESENTATION MATERIALS Course materials should be submitted 30 days in advance of the lecture/SDL/SGL and must be submitted to the Department of Medical Education no later than 2 weeks before the scheduled lecture/SDL/SGL. Failure to submit materials within this timeframe will result in a referral to the Campus Dean, with the possibility of being removed as the instructor. Presentations that do not meet the criteria of this policy will not be accepted by the Department of Medical Education, nor presented to students. In such cases, the materials will be returned to the faculty member for appropriate revision and resubmission to the Department of Medical Education at least one week prior to the time of the lecture/SDL/SGL. 5. REVIEW OF PRESENTATION MATERIALS It is the responsibility of the faculty to ensure that the instructional content included in presentations is relevant and up to date. Faculty must also ensure that the learning objectives included in presentations have been updated to reflect the most current curriculum. As such, presentations must be reviewed and updated annually. 6. DURATION OF POLICY VCOM’s Policy on Presentation of Instructional Materials has been established by VCOM ’s Center for Institutional, Faculty, and Student Success and approved by Administration and is effective as of the date above and shall remain effective until amended or terminated by the President and Provost.
