Promotion Board

The Promotion Board monitors the academic progress achieved by students throughout the academic program and makes recommendations to the Campus Dean regarding students’ academic progress. The Promotion Board is convened at the end of each block/rotation in which a student has failed to make academic progress (see Reasons to Call a Promotion Board Hearing below). The Campus Dean or the appropriate Associate Dean for the academic year may also call a meeting of the Promotion Board in cases where the academic progress of a student is affected by leaves of absence or other similar factors. Procedures for Calling a Promotion Board Promotion Board is held at the end of each block/rotation, after all grades have been determined by the Associate Dean for Pre-Clinical Education, the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, and/or the Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME. The appropriate Associate Dean will call for a Promotion Board hearing and serve as the Chair of the Promotion Board if a student has: Reasons to Call a Promotion Board For OMS1 and OMS 2 Students The Associate Dean for Pre-Clinical Education will refer to the Promotion Board any student who has: • F Course Grades: o Received an F grade for the overall course o Failed to pass a Promotion Board approved remediation for a course resulting in an F grade o Failed any component of an academic year that is required for promotion to the next academic year • Repeated F grades of the same or different required components of a course or courses within an academic year, regardless of successful remediation of the component from the previous block. Examples include failure of any of the following: anatomy lecture, anatomy practical, PPC/OMM lecture, PPC/OMM practical, simulation) (i.e. fails the Block 3 anatomy practical and the Block 4 anatomy practical or fails the Block 3 PPC/OMM lecture component and the Block 4 anatomy practical component). • A GPA of 2.79 or less (to be placed on academic probation and to assure the student is utilizing academic support services as provided by CIFSS) • Demonstrated inability to make academic progress while on Academic Probation • Placement in the curriculum of a student who has been suspended or on a leave for an extended period resulting in a withdrawal and who has been approved for readmission by the Admissions Committee to determine appropriate placement in the curriculum • Other referrals by the Campus Dean or Associate Dean Reasons to Call a Promotion Board For OMS3 and OMS 4 Students The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs or the Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME will refer to Promotion Board any student who has: • Failed a clinical rotation • Failed the end-of-rotation exam within the same discipline twice • Failed to complete their research course requirement in the timeframe required • A GPA of 2.79 or less • Demonstrated inability to perform a minimum level of competency in any one area across multiple rotations on the clinical rotation competency-based evaluation form demonstrating inability to make academic progress (repeated seldom or never ratings and/or unacceptable or below expectation ratings) • Demonstrated inability to make academic progress while on an Altered Degree Plan of Study or Academic Probation
