• (MED 7262) Integrated Clinical Cases in Urogenital Medicine: 1 credit hour The Integrated Clinical Cases course is a case-based by system course utilizing evidence-based medicine. Clinical skills and professional development are major curricular focuses that span all four years, providing early patient exposure and the means to develop outstanding clinical thinking, technical skills, and a sense of professionalism. In the Integrated Clinical Cases course, pre-clinical phase, substantial curricular time is devoted to clinical skills and reasoning and professional development activities. Students meet in small groups as they work with clinical faculty to apply interview and examinations skills to the diagnosis and treatment of patients and the personal and professional aspects of becoming a physician. These activities provide focused opportunities to learn through cooperation and collaboration, which helps students develop their abilities to work with groups of colleagues and co-workers in a professional environment. • (MED 7304) Clinical Medicine: Gynecology and Obstetrics: 3.5 credit hours Clinical Medicine brings in the most common diseases affecting the male and female reproductive system and related endocrine systems and includes 80 to 90% of diseases and disorders most often seen in primary care and the emergent setting. This curriculum includes normal and abnormal pregnancy from conception to third trimester, obstetrical delivery techniques from normal vaginal birth to cesarean section, normal menstrual cycle and abnormal menses, prevention strategies in women’s health and obstetrics, sexual health and dysfunction, and sexual abuse. The curriculum provides the clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and treatment. Conditions in gynecology include genetic, infectious, acute and chronic medical, traumatic, and surgical cases and incorporate the anatomy, physiology, and pathology knowledge learned earlier in the curriculum/block. Treatment includes osteopathic principles, pharmacology, and surgical treatments of the renal and male systems. The course is taught in lecture format but often requires a pre-reading by the student so that cases may be discussed in class. Diagnostic procedures are discussed including colposcopy, radiology, laboratory results, and other diagnostic exams important in making a diagnosis and providing treatment. The OB/GYN department oversees the physical exam of women where simulated pelvic models are used followed by live standardized patient examinations. A simulated OB/Delivery model is used to demonstrate live birth and delivery techniques and a newborn simulator for neonatal resuscitation. Students are also taught the interprofessional role of the obstetrical nurse, nurse midwife, and nursing role in newborn care. Nursing professionals are also involved in the simulated pelvic models experience and live Standardized Patient exams. The course is tested by computer examination and clinical laboratory participation. • (MED 7313) Clinical Medicine: Endocrinology: 1 credit hour Clinical Medicine: Endocrinology overviews the normal endocrine findings and the conditions that cause the most common endocrine disorders including infectious, genetic, and acquired diseases. The course provides the most common thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, and other endocrine disorders and their management. This curriculum provides the clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and treatment. Cases incorporate the anatomy, physiology and pathology knowledge learned earlier in the curriculum/block. Treatment includes osteopathic principles, pharmacology, and surgical treatments. Diagnostic procedures are presented including radiology, laboratory results, and other disease specific diagnostic exams. The course is taught in lecture and case presentation format and often requires a pre reading by the student for the cases discussed in class. The knowledge gained in this course is also needed to pass the corresponding SP examinations in the PPC/OMM course.
