grades at the end of each rotation though the VCOM Portal. For the third year, all rotations have a clinical rotation grade and a clinical modules/exam grade. OMS 3 students must pass both the "module/exam" and "rotation" portions of the course. 2. Educational Modules/Exams: In addition to being assessed on clinical performance skills during the rotation, students are also assessed on the basic science and medical knowledge acquired through educational modules. The educational modules utilize on-line cases, required reading assignments, VCOM TV recordings, and other forms of delivery to provide the medical knowledge for the third year curriculum. Students are expected to complete all of the assigned materials in order to complete the entire curriculum assigned for the clinical module. An end-of-rotation exam is administered to each students at the end of each rotation to assess the student’s basic content and medical knowledge acquired during the rotation. The OMS 3 modules are assigned a traditional letter grade (A, B+, B, C+, C, and F) based on the end-of rotation exam score and are calculated into the GPA. OMS 3 students receive the clinical modules/exam grade through the VCOM Portal system posted after each rotation. Since the OMM exam consists of questions that are integrated throughout the year on each end-of-rotation exam, the OMM clinical module/final exam grade is available to OMS 3 students through the VCOM Portal system at the end of the OMS 3 year. Comprehensive Exams : Two comprehensive exams are given during the OMS 3 year to evaluate long term retention. One exam is the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Performance Exam (COMPE). The COMPE is administered during the OMS 3 year and is a summative evaluation of osteopathic manipulative medicine and standardized patient examination skills. This exam evaluates performance of communication, physical examination, osteopathic medicine, and diagnosing and treating patients in the ambulatory, hospital, or emergent care settings. The second exam is Phase 2 of the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Self-Assessment Examination (COMSAE) is the other comprehensive exam administered toward the end of the OMS 3 year. The COMSAE Phase 2 exam serves as the comprehensive medical knowledge exam to measure cumulative medical knowledge required for entering the OMS 4 year, as well as that needed for COMLEX Level 2 CE. The student is provided with feedback on areas of weakness in their knowledge base and may take the exam more than one time to pass. Research and Scholarly Activity: During the OMS 3 year, students are required to complete research and produce a thesis or scholarly paper of publishable quality. This scholarly activity provides students the opportunity to further develop research, critical thinking and writing skills, all while working in collaboration with VCOM clinical faculty members. The paper is assigned a traditional letter grade (A, B+, B, C+, C, and F) and is calculated into the GPA. OMS 3 students receive the paper grade through the VCOM Portal system at the end of the academic year. 5. Documentation: Students are required to maintain a log to identify the procedures performed, and to log the ICD 10 codes of the patient cases seen by diagnosis, to assess the number of essential patient encounters in each core specialty. The faculty member will verify the information at the end of the rotation either online using a password signature, or by signing the log.
