SOIMA Student Osteopathic Internal Medicine Association T he Student Osteopathic Internal Medicine Association (SOIMA)

strives to enhance student knowledge about the field of internal medicine and its many exciting specialties. The 2016-2017 year began with SOIMA members assisting VCOM faculty to provide free sports physicals for the community at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Spartanburg, enabling school children to participate in sports and giving SOIMA members hands-on experience in practicing physical examinations. During the first week of classes, the organization also welcomed new students by hosting a networking event downtown during the weekly Music on Main event. In the fall, SOIMA members partnered with the ACOP student organization to host a residency panel focused on pediatrics and pediatric internal medicine, in which residents from the Greenville Hospital System Children’s Hospital gave insight about life as a resident and making the transition from medical student to resident and beyond. SOIMA also participated in ACOP’s annual Pediatric Health Fair, hosting a “Dress Up Like a Doc” station and having volunteers at different stations throughout the event. SOIMA hosts an ongoing free health clinic every month at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, in partnership with HCMO and SAAO student organizations. The clinic provides free health care to members of the community and provides a platform

In the spring, SOIMA members hosted the organization’s annual health fair at The Bridge in the Northside neighborhood. This exciting event provides health checks and physicals for people of all ages in the community and allows VCOM students to work together and practice clinical skills while connecting with the community.

for Access Health to assist patients in accessing regular healthcare services and providers. Under the supervision of healthcare professionals, SOIMA members practice their clinical skills and practice for Standardized Patient Testing during these clinics. The organization is in the process of bringing in nursing and pharmacy students to make the experience more collaborative and highlight the significance of an inter-professional approach to medicine. SOIMA also hosted a diabetic foot clinic in February, in addition to the regular free clinic services.
