VCOM Auburn Class of 2022 - Graduation Program

Mission The mission of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) is to prepare globally minded, community-focused physicians to meet the needs of rural and medically underserved populations and promote research to improve human health. VCOM’s faculty, staff and students value professionalism, integrity, duty, compassion, altruism, knowledge and critical thinking. Class of 2022 Statement The Class of 2022 adopted this class statement at orientation to reflect their commitment to VCOM and their future as osteopathic physicians: We have been invited to join the ranks of healthcare professionals, and to connect as driven individuals with unique stories from varying regions of the world. Our pursuit of the biomedical sciences and arts is fueled by our love for people and the curiosity that fills our minds.

In the face of the inevitable battles of our profession we will be steadfast and maintain an optimistic resolve.

We converge as a unified body of lifelong learners, leaders and healers to bring comfort to the ill and provide aid to those in need without bias. Together, we will be stewards of wellbeing, working in harmony with one another as the mind, body and spirit harmonize to breathe life into the world.

The Degree of Osteopathic Medicine

The Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree is granted to and conferred by VCOM upon candidates who are of good moral, professional and ethical character and have satisfactorily completed all academic and national board requirements.

Letter from the President

Dear Class of 2022, on behalf of the entire College, we want to take this time to congratulate each graduate. It is your dedication, strength and stamina that have brought you to this exciting milestone in your career. When you enter your

osteopathic medicine: “You do not know all of medicine today and you never will, so be a life-long learner. Caring for the whole person is to care for their mental health, their physical health and their spiritual well- being, so practice life-long

residency, you will be a significant caregiver for your patients. Your future is so bright it is blinding. The practice of medicine you will enter after today will not be the same practice of medicine when you retire. Remember these truths from Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, the father of

caring. And remember the human body is a wonderful creation with an amazing ability to heal when given the right environment, the right care and right support.” We are proud of every graduate and welcome you to join 4,100 graduates known as VCOM Alumni!

The Osteopathic Oath

I do hereby affirm my loyalty to the profession I am about to enter. I will be mindful always of my great responsibility to preserve the health and the life of my patients, to retain their confidence and respect both as a physician and a friend who will guard their secrets with scrupulous honor and fidelity, to perform faithfully my professional duties, to employ only those recognized methods of treatment consistent with good judgment and with my skill and ability, keeping in mind always nature’s laws and the body’s inherent capacity for recovery. I will be ever vigilant in aiding in the general welfare of the community, sustaining its laws and institutions, not engaging in those practices which will in any way bring shame or discredit upon myself or my profession. I will give no drugs for deadly purposes to any person, though it may be asked of me. I will endeavor to work in accord with my colleagues in a spirit of progressive cooperation and never by word or by act cast imputations upon them or their rightful practices. I will look with respect and esteem upon all those who have taught me my art. To my college I will be loyal and strive always for its best interests and for the interests of the students who will come after me. I will be ever alert to further the application of basic biologic truths to the healing arts and to develop the principles of osteopathy which were first enunciated by Andrew Taylor Still.
