T he HCA Healthcare LewisGale Hospital Montgomery/VCOM Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal (ONMM3) Residency Program (ACGME# 2755100002) at VCOM Virginia was initiated in response to the growing population of patients in need of osteopathic medical care. It is a one-year residency program completed after successfully completing a prior residency, and it provides training in the development of osteopathic clinical skills needed to diagnose and manage illnesses and injuries with an emphasis on developing expert diagnosticians for pain differential diagnosis and application of manual skills. The initial VCOM residency program began in 2016 as an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) NMM-OMM+1 Residency. postgraduate training system, the program became accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and was renamed the Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Residency (ONMM). VCOM offers the ONMM3 pathway, allowing entry into the third year of the program followed by one year of training. The ONMM3 program delivers the educational experiences necessary for residents to gain the knowledge, psychomotor, and interpersonal skills, professional attitudes, and hands-on experience required of ONMM specialists. VCOM faculty provide educational and clinical opportunities that support residents in progressively assuming responsibility for patient care. This program emphasizes osteopathic medicine as a philosophy applied to medical practice, diagnostic skills, and a strong understanding of anatomy and physiology— developing residents into well-rounded physicians. It also fosters academic and research growth, preparing graduates to serve as program directors and researchers in osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine.
