VCOM 2023 Annual Report
C ommunities across the country are facing unprecedented shortages of physicians, clinicians, nurses and technologists. Rural areas are experiencing particular challenges in recruiting and retaining physicians. That’s why VCOM’s unwavering commitment to serving rural and medically underserved populations is more important than ever. VCOM graduates provide
much-needed care to our neighbors, families and friends. The College’s mission is especially laudable as we’ve begun to learn that one’s ZIP code is a better predictor of health status than blood pressure and geography, too, can create care inequities. We welcome VCOM graduates in our graduate medical education programs and our medical staffs as together we provide world-class care to patients in our region. Nancy Howell Agee CEO, Carilion Clinic
I came to VCOM because being part of a new campus with a new population of students I’d never worked with sounded like an exciting challenge—and I was correct! Without a doubt, getting to shake hands with our students when they walk across stage at Graduation [is the most exciting part of my job]. We have some awesome students and getting to know and develop relationships with them from before they’re admitted to after they graduate is my favorite part of my job. There are around 25-30 graduates I regularly keep in touch with and relationships like that are not something you get in every job. Jake Williamson, MEd, PhD VCOM-Auburn Associate Dean for Student Affairs, hired in 2015
W e could hire another 100 physicians tomorrow and they would all be full in a matter of months. VCOM students have a proclivity to live and serve small and mid-size communities and that greatly advantages us. VCOM also significantly provides economic benefit to our community and that is all part of the strong relationship we have with VCOM as our partner. Having served on the Board for several years now, I see first hand the test
results, the graduation results, the residency placements at top tier programs in the U.S. At its core VCOM provides a stellar education and preparation. When a VCOM physician joins our team here, they are amongst the best in clinical quality and patient satisfaction results area.
