VCOM-Carolinas: Responding to the Primary Care Shortage in the Carolinas
I n response to the enrollment of a significant number of students from western North Carolina and South Carolina, and support from the Spartanburg Regional Hospital, VCOM founded the Carolinas campus of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Campus Overview T he VCOM-Carolinas campus is nestled in the beautifully preserved, historic downtown area of Spartanburg, South Carolina. VCOM became the hub of development that is transforming the Northside of the city with a new walking/biking path, new housing projects and restaurants.
2010 Groundbreaking is held on the grounds of the old Spartan Mill site in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Construction begins. Timothy Kowalski, DO, FACN, is appointed as vice dean, and later becomes dean of the campus. The VCOM Carolinas History Timeline
2008 Responding to the primary care shortages in North and South Carolina and in recognition of the high number of students from the Carolinas on the VCOM campus in Blacksburg, Virgina, the College begins plans for a Carolinas campus. Spartanburg, South Carolina becomes the best choice for a new branch location.
2011 The first osteopathic medical school in South Carolina opens as construction is completed. The first class of students matriculates in July.
VCOM is licensed by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and extended accreditation status as a VCOM branch campus to recruit and admit students by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).
