VCOM 2023 Annual Report

VCOM-Auburn Outreach Highlights 2023-2024 • On weekends, VCOM-Louisiana students volunteer at Gardens of Somerset, a senior living community in Monroe, Louisiana. The students visit with residents and facilitate activities. • The VCOM-Louisiana Volunteer Committee and St. Francis Medical Center Foundation partnered to create a new volunteer initiative: the St. Francis Art Cart. This cart contains art supplies and games, ranging from coloring books and crayons to LEGO sets. The Art Cart allows volunteers to deliver art supplies as well as color and play with pediatric patients at St. Francis Medical Center Monroe, while they wait in the PICU, emergency room, Healthy Moms Prenatal Clinic and more. • VCOM-Louisiana members of ACOP student organization participated in Sterlington Elementary Doctor Day. Medical students had various stations around the room consisting of bone boxes, heart/lung models (made out of brown paper bags), “How to Stay Healthy” poster boards and various other medical tools. VCOM students also educated the elementary students about what it means to be a doctor. • The VCOM-Louisiana Volunteer Committee organized student volunteers for Ouachita Green’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, where VCOM students helped to properly dispose of expired and unused pharmaceuticals from hundreds of community members. This event helped to reduce the amount of hazardous materials going into the landfills and waterways of the local community. • Second-year VCOM-Louisiana students participated in an open house event at the Medical Office of Mangham, where they administered COVID-19 and other vaccinations to community members. They also provided health-related information and offered heart, lung and blood pressure screenings.
