VCOM-Carolinas Outreach Highlights 2023-2024 • VCOM, in partnership with South Carolina’s Department of Health and Environmental Control, has been providing STI screening, treatment and prevention to reduce the current prevalence of STIs and slow future rising incidence rates. VCOM students gain hands-on experiences working with rural and underserved patients, addressing critical public health needs, and developing and refining their skills. • This last summer, faculty and students organized and hosted an immersive day camp for high school students called the Summer Enrichment Experience (SEE) program. • Through a partnership with St. Luke’s Medical Clinic, the VCOM-Carolinas Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) was a central hub during a weeklong local mission trip over the summer. Students immersed themselves in the local communities of Inman and Pacolet, treating uninsured and underinsured area residents daily. • VCOM-Carolinas coordinated Mini Medical Schools, led by VCOM students, which took place in high schools in rural and medically underserved communities to promote wellness and prevent high-risk behaviors in early teens. • The American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians (ACOP) student organization Twenty VCOM students helped perform sports physicals on approximately 35 special needs children so they could participate in their local Special Olympics tournament. conducted Special Olympics Health Physicals at Cleveland Academy.
