driving for work related duties that have been assigned by the supervisor are considered hours worked regardless of the time of day. Employees should assure the combined travel time for work related duties and time at work do not exceed the 8 hour day or cause the employee to exceed the 40 hour workweek unless pre-approved by the supervisor and Division Officer (lunch or meal time is not included as a part of this work time). b. Phone Calls and Email Work-related duties include telephone calls, emails, or any other duties an employee is asked or expected to perform off campus by their supervisor. These duties should not be done while commuting or traveling to and from work or done outside of normally scheduled work hours unless assigned by and approved by the Division Officer. Non exempt employees should not perform these tasks outside of work hours unless prior approval is obtained by the Officer of the employee’s Division. c. Conferences and Events Attending a required off campus work event is considered work time. These include college related presentations the employee is asked to participate in or perform, faculty development sessions by the college, or research events the employee is required to attend. Non-exempt employees required to attend any of these events in which attendance will lead to overtime, must be approved by the Division Officer in advance. Salaried, non-exempt employees are working if they are required to attend conference events or meetings, meals, social events, or training sessions for work outside of normal hours, regardless of the time of day these required events are held. The Supervisor must; therefore, provide time off in the same workweek (Sun-Sat) as the conference, meetings, meals, etc. to avoid working over 40 hours or overtime. d. Working From Home If the non-exempt employee is asked to perform work at home that will result in overtime for the week, the employee should complete the overtime sheet in advance and have the Division Officer sign off on this sheet in advance of working overtime. 3.1.2 Travel and Duties Not Considered as Work a. Non-required Travel and Commuting Routine time spent by employees traveling to and from the workplace is not considered work hours, this time is considered commuting. Travel to other points of departure, such as from home to and from airports, is not considered hours worked and is considered commuting. Travel time spent riding as a passenger, even if travelling to a required work related event, on airplanes, trains, boats, buses, or automobiles is not considered hours worked and is considered commuting.
