Policy #U031
In addition to the disease prevention education taught to students during their medical education, VCOM students are instructed on environmental and occupation exposure and universal precautions prior to biomedical and clinical laboratories int the OMS 1 and OMS 2 years and prior to clinical experiences. Students are also taught about disease prevention in the Principles of Primary Care course and the Prevention, Epidemiology and Public Health course. All students are required to have basic life support training upon entry and advanced cardiac life support while enrolled. Students who have other “at risk” health conditions are screened to assure they meet technical health standards for their personal health and safety as well as the safety of the patient they care for. Students are also provided information for accidental needle sticks and are assured guidance and safety through the process by the Clinical Affairs Division. VCOM provides educational programs and campaigns to prevent and promote the awareness of dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. On an annual basis, students complete mandatory training on Title IX. In addition, VCOM’s curriculum incorporates these topics. In the OMS 1 year in the Professionalism and Ethics course, students receive instruction on physician and student impairment and sexual harassment and sexual violence. In the OMS 2 year as part of the Clinical Medicine Obstetrics and Gynecology rotation, students receive instruction on sexual and domestic violence through a seminar run by community domestic and sexual violence experts and physicians. The OMS 2 year Professionalism and Ethics course also includes instruction on abuse and the reporting responsibilities versus patient confidentiality responsibilities of physicians. Curriculum in the OMS 3 and 4 years also includes instruction on domestic and sexual violence. VCOM’s Via Wellness Committee and other Student Organizations host seminars and other informational events throughout the year on topics related to sexual assault, domestic and dating violence and stalking. 9.2 Prevention and Awareness Education for Employees VCOM informs employees about campus security procedures and practices and encourages employees to be responsible for their own security and the security of others on an annual basis. At the beginning of each academic year, employees are directed to review VCOM’s safety and security policies and procedures.
