The supervising clinical faculty member and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs/Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME shall privately discuss their assessment with the fatigued/stressed student, attempt to identify the underlying reasons for impairment and discuss the circumstances of their release and fitness to return to duty. A student who is released from a clinical assignment due to fatigue must have permission to resume work from the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs/Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME. 8.4.2 Responsibilities of the Student Students who are removed from clinical duties due to fatigue should rest at the hospital/clinical site (e.g. call room) prior to driving home or arrange alternative transportation. After resting, if they remain too fatigued to transport themselves home safely, the student should initiate a ride through a commercial service or have a friend/family member pick them up and drive them home. A student who is released from a clinical assignment due to fatigue must meet with the supervising clinical faculty member and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs/Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME to identify the underlying reasons for impairment and discuss the circumstances of their release and fitness to return to duty. A student who is released from a clinical assignment due to fatigue must have permission to resume work from the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs/Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME. Any student who notices a co-student’s fatigue has the professional responsibility to notify the supervising attending, DSME, and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs/Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME without fear of reprisal or retaliation. A student who feels excessively fatigued has the professional responsibility to notify the supervising clinical faculty member, DSME, and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs/Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME without fear of reprisal or retaliation. 9. PREVENTION EDUCATION 9.1 Prevention and Awareness Education for Students VCOM informs students about campus security procedures and practices and encourages students to be responsible for their own security and the security of others on an annual basis. At the beginning of each academic year, students are directed to review VCOM’s safety and security policies and procedures. As part of VCOM’s fire safety procedures, students are provided with building evacuation maps. These are provided to all first-year students at orientation. All students are also provided these maps annually.
