• Faculty who hold a MD or DO degree who do not serve as a Clinical Department Chair, who have determined their career path to be in the area of academic teaching in the pre-clinical curriculum on-campus, are not required to obtain/maintain medical licensure or board certification for their faculty roles. An example is those faculty who limit their teaching to anatomy, physical diagnosis, technical aspects of procedural skills, basic pathology, or other specific role that does not involve clinical practice or teaching in the clinical setting. • Faculty who have completed their MD or DO degree outside the United States and whose clinical practice is limited to the international setting must be fully qualified for their positions according to the laws within that country and must meet the country’s standards for medical licensure, board certification, and practice in that setting. These faculty seeking appointment with VCOM must be evaluated by the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and recommended for appointment. 3.2 Academic Rank Full-time, part-time and adjunct faculty, regardless of track, will be appointed to one of the following academic ranks: • Assistant Instructor • Instructor Academic rank will be assigned according to the criteria stated under Faculty Appointments and Promotion and is subject to approval by the appropriate Campus Dean, Provost, and final approval of the Board. 3.2.1 Assistant Instructor Appointment to the rank of Assistant Instructor requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree that is relevant to the faculty member’s teaching or research position at VCOM. Before being hired, the faculty member must have been reviewed and have obtained a written endorsement from the Associate Dean for Curriculum, Assessment and Medical Education; the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs; or the Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME with written approval by the Campus Dean as to having the appropriate expertise to teach or perform research in their area of expertise (required by accreditation to teach at the doctoral level if holding a bachelor’s degree). 3.2.2 Instructor Appointment to the rank of Instructor requires a minimum of a master’s degree or a health sciences terminal degree that is relevant to the faculty member’s teaching or research position at VCOM. Before being hired, the faculty member must have been reviewed and have obtained a written endorsement from the Associate Dean for Curriculum, Assessment and Medical Education; the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs; or the Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME with written approval by the Campus Dean as to having the appropriate expertise to teach or perform research in their area of • Assistant Professor • Associate Professor • Professor
