VCOM Faculty Handbook
confirmation of the candidate’s initial appointment within 30 days of the date of the letter. All initial appointments are considered temporary for a period not to exceed one year until confirmed by the Provost and the Board.
Temporary Initial Appointment Temporary initial appointment may be granted to academic track, clinical track, research track, or adjunct tract candidates by the appropriate Associate Dean until the application for initial appointment is complete (not to exceed six months). However, candidates should be encouraged to submit their initial appointment applications to the APT in a timely manner so that they may be considered by the APT Committee without the need for temporary appointment. Temporary appointment is a six month time-limited appointment and is granted upon condition of the candidate having appropriate credentials and, if a physician, an active and unrestricted medical license. If required, a temporary initial appointment may be renewed once, after which, the physician either completes their application for initial appointment or is removed from teaching responsibilities. The Associate Dean is responsible for reviewing the credentials and licensure of the candidate, ensuring that the candidate has the appropriate basic credential to teach, and awarding the temporary appointment prior to the candidate teaching for VCOM. Upon completion of the application for initial appointment, the Associate Dean will bring the candidate’s initial application packet to the APT Committee to review following the review process for initial appointment as outlined above. Appointment Re-Credentialing All clinical track faculty will undergo appointment re-credentialing five years following their date of initial appointment and every five years thereafter. Full- and part-time employed Academic Track faculty at VCOM are not required to participate in the five-year appointment re-credentialing process, as Academic Track faculty’s credentials are reviewed annually through the faculty evaluation process and when seeking contract renewal. Appointment re-credentialing is contingent upon submission of an updated CV, active medical licensure, and current board certification if applicable, and any outstanding teaching evaluations, publications, and/or any faculty development attended. Application for appointment re-credentialing will be reviewed by the appropriate Department Chair and Associate Dean who will submit recommendations to the APT Committee for final review. Completion of re-credentialing renews the faculty appointment at the rank granted at the last appointment for another five years. Failure to complete appointment re-credentialing within a reasonable timeframe may result in appointment inactivation. Appointment Re-Activation Academic track, clinical track, research track, or adjunct faculty who leave VCOM’s employment, but who later resume their employment with VCOM, must apply to the APT Committee for appointment re-activation upon their return. Appointment re-activation is contingent upon submission of an updated CV, active medical licensure if applicable, and current board certification if applicable, and any outstanding teaching evaluations, publications, and/or any faculty development attended. Application for appointment re-activation will be reviewed by the appropriate Department Chair and Associate Dean who will submit recommendations to the APT Committee for final review. Completion of re-activation renews the faculty appointment at the rank granted at the last appointment. Faculty Promotion in Academic Rank Promotion of faculty in rank is a means by which VCOM recognizes excellence in its faculty. Promotions are not simply awarded for years of service but are earned by the faculty member's efforts to work towards the goals of the College.
