are appropriate and are according to the year of graduation, to the area of teaching, and to the location of the teaching. • Clinical Track Faculty who teach in the patient care environment at a VCOM affiliated core rotation site must: o hold a current medical license in the state in which they practice with no sanctions; and o have had AOA or ABMS board certification/board eligibility in the specialty being taught at some time in their career. Board eligibility is defined as having a pathway toward board certification or re-certification. • Temporary faculty who teach in the patient care environment at a non-core rotation site must: o hold a current medical license in the state in which they practice with no sanctions. o It is preferred that these faculty have had AOA or ABMS board certification/board eligibility in the specialty being taught at some time in their career; however, it is not required. • Clinical Department Chairs, regardless of whether they teach in the patient care environment, must: o have an active medical license in the state in which they practice with no sanctions; and o have an active AOA or ABMS board certification in their specialty. • Clinical faculty who have been designated by VCOM as Primary Care Leadership, regardless of whether they teach in the patient care environment, must: o have an active medical license in the state in which they practice with no sanctions; and o have an active AOA or ABMS board certification in a primary care discipline (family medicine, internal medicine, or pediatrics. • The Chair of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, regardless of whether they teach in the patient care environment, must: o have an active medical license in the state in which they practice with no sanctions; and o have an active board certification from the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (AOBNMM) or a Certificate of Special Proficiency in OMM (C-SPOMM). • When state medical licensure requires board certification, Clinical Track Faculty, who teach in the patient care environment, are expected to maintain board certification through recertification, maintenance of certification, or grandfathered permanent certification. • Faculty who hold a MD or DO degree who do not serve as a Clinical Department Chair, who have determined their career path to be in the area of academic teaching in the pre-clinical curriculum on campus, are not required to obtain/maintain medical licensure or board certification for their faculty roles. An example is those faculty who limit their teaching to anatomy, physical diagnosis, technical aspects of procedural skills, basic pathology, or other specific role that does not involve clinical practice or teaching in the clinical setting. • Faculty who have completed their MD or DO degree outside the United States and whose clinical practice is limited to the international setting must be fully qualified for their positions according to the laws within that country and must meet the country’s standards for medical licensure, board certification, and practice in that setting. These faculty seeking appointment with VCOM must be evaluated by the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and recommended for appointment.
