VCOM Faculty Handbook
• A contractual agreement with a VCOM affiliated academic health center or medical group who teaches VCOM students in the clinical setting while working for the employer, where the agreement outlines that VCOM must pay the clinical entity for the faculty member’s duties and the faculty member is to be paid by the employer. As, VCOM OMS 4 students may choose from a list of approved electives to participate in, many of which may be at non-core rotation sites, VCOM has established a procedure to review and approve the credentials of physicians at non-core rotation sites to serve as temporary faculty for the rotation. These physicians are reviewed and approved by VCOM in one of the following ways: • Physicians at non-core rotation sites who serve as faculty with an ACGME or military approved residency program are reviewed and approved by VCOM as follows: o ACGME accreditation standards require GME faculty to have appropriate qualifications in their field, hold appropriate institutional appointments, and have current board certification or possess qualifications judged acceptable to the review committee. As such, VCOM accepts the faculty status of physicians in the GME program that have been reviewed and approved by the GME Review Committee for an ACGME accredited residency program to serve as temporary faculty for the VCOM student while on the elective rotation. In addition, physicians supervising military clinical experiences are assured to have appropriate institutional appointments within their facilities and fields. o Students wishing to complete an elective with these faculty must submit their confirmation email of the scheduled rotation to the Director for OMS 4 Clinical Rotations. o The Director for OMS 4 Clinical Rotations confirms that the faculty physician is an appointed faculty member of the GME program. o To assure appropriate qualifications, the Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME reviews these faculty’s credentials and grants final approval. • Physicians at non-core rotation sites who do not serve as faculty with an ACGME residency program are reviewed and approved by VCOM as follows: o Students wishing to complete an elective with these faculty must submit the “Request to Attend Non-Core Clinical Rotations” form, which includes the name and credentials of the supervising physician and a copy of a current medical license in the state in which they practice with no sanctions. o To assure appropriate qualifications, the Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME reviews these faculty’s credentials and grants final approval. For appointment or advancement in rank, clinical track faculty’s teaching and service accomplishments outweigh their accomplishments in research and scholarly activity; however, while research may not be a significant part of their employment, scholarly activity remains an expectation. The appointment process for clinical track faculty considers clinical teaching performance, clinical expertise, and accomplishment in the clinical realm. Scholarly activity for clinical track faculty often consists of case reports but may include research on clinical instruction or clinically-based research. Service considerations may include clinical service, professional service, or service-based activities related to community health. The current involvement and benefit for students from the College is considered rather than direct service to the College. However, to advance to the rank of professor, clinical track faculty mush demonstrate sustained outstanding performance in teaching, service, and scholarly activity. Clinical track faculty who no longer hold active board certification are not eligible for promotion in rank through the clinical track. The title of Clinical Faculty Instructor may be awarded to those clinical faculty who completed a DO or MD degree and post-doctoral training prior to 1994 when board certification was not required in their primary field of practice and/or to those clinical faculty who achieved initial board certification that has since expired and rendered them
