The OMS 4 Emergency Medicine Rotation is the only OMS 4 rotation that includes required completion of didactic modules. Thus, in addition to being assessed through the clinical rotation competency evaluation, students are also assessed on the basic science and medical knowledge acquired through clinical modules. Students are expected to complete all of the assigned materials in order to complete the entire curriculum assigned for the clinical module. While there is no end-of-rotation exam or separate grade for the EM modules, students are required to successfully complete the clinical module portion of the course in order to pass the rotation. The full grade for the course will be derived from the clinical rotation competency evaluation. OMS 4 students receive the course grade at the end of the rotation through VLMS. Satisfactory Academic Progress In order for a student to be deemed as making satisfactory academic progress in years OMS 3 and OMS 4, they must successfully complete clinical rotations and clinical modules/exams and all other curricular requirements, pass the COMPE, COMSAE Phase 2, COMLEX Level 2 CE, and/or meet the requirements as set forth by the Promotion Board. See the National Boards section in this Catalog/Handbook for additional academic progress requirements including promotion to third and fourth years. Fourth year students should refer to the Graduation Requirements section in this Handbook for more information about graduation requirements. Those students who continue to be unable to make satisfactory progress in passing all rotations and requirements are evaluated by the Promotion Board. The Promotion Board, in the process of determining eligibility for promotion or graduation, may consider the results of the student assessments, attendance, conduct and potential professional attributes in making final determinations. Student Involvement and Expectations in Clinical Rotation Grading Rotation evaluation begins during the first week of the rotation. By the end of the first week, students should request feedback from their preceptor by asking, “How am I doing?” and “What areas should I improve?” Students should continue to seek informal feedback at the end of each subsequent week to support ongoing improvement and avoid unexpected outcomes on the final evaluation. Students are responsible for actively seeking and incorporating feedback throughout the rotation. It is also the student’s responsibility to schedule the final evaluation to ensure timely completion. Per VCOM policy, students may not leave the rotation site until the evaluation has been completed, discussed, and signed by the preceptor. Students should additionally check with the site coordinator on a monthly basis to ensure no evaluation forms are outstanding. Students are responsible for promptly notifying the Director of Clinical Rotations and/or the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs or Director for OMS 4 and GME of any difficulty obtaining a completed evaluation from the preceptor by the final day of the rotation (not several months later). The Director of Clinical Rotations may assist the student in the process of obtaining an evaluation if a preceptor is negligent in his/her responsibility to complete or submit the evaluation form. If an evaluation form is not completed and submitted within 60 days of the rotation’s conclusion, the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs or the Associate Dean for OMS 4 and GME will intervene with the preceptor to obtain the evaluation. • If an evaluation form is not completed and turned into the site coordinator or Director of Clinical Rotations within 60 days of the conclusion of the rotation or by the end of the semester (whichever occurs first), the
