EVALUATION OF ONLINE VERSUS LIVE LECTURES TEACHING FORMAT ON FAMILY MEDICINE AND INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENTS’ PERCEIVED EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS

Introduction: Before the Covid-19 pandemic, all residents gathered weekdays for 1-2- hour didactic sessions. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, social distancing, virtual online resident didactics and meetings using Microsoft TEAMs® online conferencing were implemented. To determine residents’ perceived educational benefit between TEAMs ® sessions versus live sessions and residents’ potential preference for TEAMs ® sessions post pandemic, a monthly online survey of all residents began in April 2020. TEAMs ® sessions were recorded for resident review which had not been done for live sessions. For the first time, Night Block residents could access daytime recorded didactic sessions and away rotation residents could participate in didactic sessions and resident meetings. Methods: Four monthly online questionnaires were sent to all residents. Question content evolved over the first two months. Residents also were asked how TEAMs ® session could be improved. Results: Over half (25 of 42) residents (18 FM, 24 IM) completed one or more of the 4 surveys (April –August). Early on, PGY3 residents responded most frequently while in the last 2 surveys, more PGY1 responded. The monthly resident preference for TEAMs® sessions increased from 57.6% in June to 66.7% in August compared to 17.6% - 30% preferring live sessions with the remaining having no preference. For the first 3 months, months in which responding residents had experienced previous live sessions, 15% in May, 30% in June, and 17% in July (3 month mean 28%), felt they learned more in TEAMs® compared to live sessions while 54%, 55%, and 59%, (mean 55.6%) respectively, felt the learning experience was the same with either format.(Figure) On average, 30% of respondents over the last 3 months accessed recorded sessions. There were 13 of 24 residents'’ comments from the survey that specifically endorsed TEAMs ® including “ beneficial after the pandemic because people on out rotations can participate in didactics, easier to read the slides on my device, and the images are more clear" while the most frequently suggested needed improvements were that presenters should repeat questions asked, improve answering difficulties in board review question sessions, and provide more consistent good audio.

Conclusion: Based on an approximate 50% resident survey response rate over 3 months, more residents preferred TEAMs ® didactics sessions compared to live sessions and on average 28% perceived a better learning experience on TEAMs ® than live lectures while an average of 55.6% reported no difference. Thirty percent (30%) of responding residents reported accessing recorded didactic sessions. This was the first-time recorded didactics had been available in the Residency. Based on this information, TEAMs ® sessions should probably be continued, perhaps in combination with post pandemic live sessions. TEAMs can provide recorded sessions. Efforts should be made to improve presenter interactions with online residents and to make sessions’ audio more uniform.
