SOOA A specialty committee of SOSA

VRHA Virginia Rural Health Association

The VCOM Student Chapter of the Virginia Rural Health Association (VRHA) was established to contribute to the mission of the College by serving locally to improve the health of rural communities through the delivery of healthcare services and health education. Assistance is available to members to promote leadership on rural issues through advocacy, communications, education, and research. The VCOM chapter of the VRHA was the first established medical school chapter in Virginia in representing the state VRHA. Each year the organization meets the needs of many people in Southwest Virginia.

The Student Osteopathic Orthopedic Association (SOOA) is a specialty committee of SOSA. SOOA hosted an Orthopedic workshop to help students get more exposure to the field. The event included X-ray readings, explanation of standard orthopedic procedures, and hands-on practice for intramedullary nail fixation on plastic bones.

The Student Osteopathic Surgical Association (SOSA) at VCOM works to educate VCOM’s future surgeons. SOSA hosts a variety of activities throughout the year to show the relationship between osteopathic medicine and the field of surgery. SOSA Student Osteopathic Surgical Association

Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) at VCOM is the student affiliate of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). This group continually improves healthcare for everyone by fostering conversations about current healthcare topics and creating passionate future physicians. SOMA uses networking events and conferences to promote continual education. SOMA Student Osteopathic Medical Association students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians. Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical SNMA Student National Medical Association The Student Government Association (SGA) is the governing body for medical students. This student-run organization works hard to ensure that VCOM students have the best possible medical school experience. The organization works closely with faculty and staff to plan social events and handle any issues that may arise. SGA promotes a collaborative atmosphere that unifies VCOM for an enjoyable experience for everyone.

The Via Wellness program aims to promote not just a healthy body but also a strong spirit and mind. The program enriches campus life through many different sports, fitness and exercise, as well as social, cultural, and spiritual events. Students, as well as faculty, staff, and their family members are welcome to participate in all Via Wellness activities. ASIG A specialty committee of SOSA

The Anesthesia Special Interest Group (ASIG) works to provide students with a specialized look into the field of anesthesiology. Most medical students receive little exposure to anesthesiology as a profession during medical school; ASIG allows students to understand better the role of anesthesiologists and what options are available.

PROJECT SMILE A specialty committee of SOSA

Project Smile is a committee of SOSA that raises money to help families whose children have been born with cleft lips and palates. Money raised goes to help offset the cost for corrective surgery. Project Smile is a service project in which SOSA sponsors a child with cleft lip and palate.
