MMSA Medical Muslim Student Association

ICM A specialty committee of SAAO

The Medical Muslim Student Association (MMSA) at VCOM strives to make the medical community more aware of health issues unique to Muslim patients. MMSA works to bring together students with Muslim VCOM Alumni and medical professionals. The group serves the community through outreach efforts and education that improves healthcare for everyone.

Integrative and Complementary Medicine (ICM) is a special interest group of the Student American Association of Osteopathy (SAAO) that works to promote preventive medicine. ICM looks at ways to improve exercise, diet and mental health practices to contribute to overall health.

ACOP American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians The American College of Osteopathic

The Hispanic Community Medical Outreach (HCMO) organization at VCOM works to increase the health in Hispanic communities using education and helping to make healthcare more accessible. HCMO promotes cultural awareness and helps students improve their Spanish language skills. The group encourages participation in medical mission trips to Spanish speaking countries to help build skills that are usable later in students’ careers. HCMO Hispanic Community Medical Outreach The Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA) student organization at VCOM allows students to connect their faith and career through local Christian physicians, service opportunities, and faith-based resources. PSYCH Psychiatry Student Organization

The Student Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (SAMOPS) helps student doctors and their families make the transition into a military career. Every VCOM’s chapter has Health Profession Scholars (HPSP) who commit themselves to serve as military physicians upon graduation. Veterans and military spouses are welcome to join SAMOPS. The group works to promote the significant impact that osteopathic physicians have in the United States Military. SAMOPS Student Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) is a specialty committee of SAAO that educates members in the field of PM&R. This specialty is often not well-known and is a blending of neurological disease management and musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Students in this group have a wide range of interests, including sports medicine, neurology, pain management and neuromuscular medicine.

The Psychiatry Student Organization (PSYCH) at VCOM allows members to talk with professionals in the field of psychiatry to help students grow and better understand a career in the specialty. The organization helps educate the community in mental health awareness, such as how and when to seek treatment. The Student American Academy of Osteopathy (SAAO) at VCOM encourages students to use the skills that set them apart as DOs. Pediatricians (ACOP) at VCOM uses service and educational events to expose students to the broad field of pediatrics. The group works with community partners to promote osteopathic medicine in the field of pediatrics.

AOASM American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine

The American Osteopathic Association of Sports Medicine (AOASM) allows VCOM students interested in sports medicine to come together and learn about the specialty. Through partnerships with local sports medicine physicians, the group gains valuable skills to set them apart in their future careers. AOASM is also passionate about promoting the benefits of physical activity.

MHATF Mental Health Awareness Task Force

BAHM Bioethics and Humanities in Medicine Committee

The Mental Health Awareness Task Force was implemented to emphasize mental health for medical students. The group hosts events and provides resources to help relieve stress and promote healthy habits. MHATF wants to make sure students have the knowledge and resources to maintain their mental health in their future careers.

The Bioethics and Humanities in Medicine Committee (BAHM) encourages a deeper level of thinking into the culture of medicine. The group works to provide a place for students to collaborate and express themselves creatively. BAHM’s ultimate goal is to encourage the next generation of VCOM physicians to think compassionately and holistically about their future patients’ wellbeing.
