STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Student Organizations

S tudent organizations and committees are an important part of student life at VCOM. Campus involvement and community service performed by members of student organizations benefits not only the community and the region, but also the members themselves as they gain valuable knowledge, skills and experience.

The American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) gives its members the skills and information they need to succeed as osteopathic family physicians. The group also strives to provide healthcare and information to underserved patients in the local community. ACOFP American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians

students have an in-depth understanding of the field of radiology. The committee offers an exceptional comprehension of the field for students who want to be a successful physician in this specialty, but also provides broad, basic knowledge that helps any student become well-rounded.

ACONP American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists The mission of ACONP is to promote osteopathic medicine in neurology and psychiatry, to maintain and evaluate standards of proficiency and training, to stimulate original research and investigation, to collect and disseminate the results of such work for the benefit of the college, the public and the profession at large. ACOEP American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians

WILDERNESS MEDICINE A suborganization of ACOEP

DERMATOLOGY A specialty committee of ACOI

ACOOG American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists

Wilderness Medicine student organization aims to help medical students bridge the gap between many different specialties. Wilderness Medicine is the practice where definitive care is more than one hour away, and often days to weeks away—defined by difficult patient access, limited equipment, and environmental extremes; decision making, creative thinking and improvising.

The American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP) exists to support high-quality emergency care, promote and protect Osteopathic emergency physicians’ interest, ensure the highest standards of postgraduate education, and provide leadership in research through the Foundation for Osteopathic Emergency Medicine, in a distinct unified profession. VCOM’s chapter of ACOEP introduces students to emergency medicine by providing speakers, organizing clinical skills workshops, providing CPR classes, and promoting safety and medical education in the community.

The Dermatology Committee gives students the chance to develop a well-rounded knowledge about the field of dermatology, while preparing them to be a successful residency applicant. Not only are students interested in dermatology encouraged to participate, but also students interested in primary care. The committee also works to raise awareness for skin cancer in the community.

The VCOM chapter of ACOOG promotes awareness of and interest in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Additionally, the chapter attempts to increase awareness of women’s health issues, educate students on sub specialties of OB/GYN, and coordinate service opportunities that promote the health and well being of women in our community.
