MESSAGE FROM THE VIRGINIA DEAN Four Campuses, One College

VCOM-VA graduated our 15th class, honoring 170 new physicians from the Class of 2021 this Spring. We were able to honor the graduates and be appropriately socially distanced in a special graduation ceremony at the iconic Virginia Tech in Lane Stadium. On campus, we honored our military health professions scholarship students, with the keynote provided by Dr. Kenneth Moritsugu, the first Asian American US Surgeon General. VCOM’s future in the Southeast is enhanced and solidified by our esteemed alumni. Many alumni have returned to meet the needs of rural and medically underserved populations. VCOM prides itself on recruiting a significant portion of our students from the Appalachian and Delta regions, with our graduates returning to these areas. Our numbers have grown to 72% of alumni practicing in our target region and 52% practicing in medically underserved areas. We are so thankful to our alumni who redoubled their efforts to support our current students during the pandemic. Many returned

promotes inclusion. VCOM-VA created an ongoing seminar series hosted by the Diversity Committee, which focuses on health disparities that affect minority communities, particularly the African American community. This initiative brings research and experience based awareness to our students, with a focus on medicine. These seminars are moderated by student leaders with alumni panelists contributing their clinical knowledge and experience.

This year marked our 5th Annual William G. Anderson, DO, Black History Series keynote. Dr. Anderson was a founding board member and led the Albany Movement in Georgia in 1961 with his friends Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and Ralph Abernathy. The event was well attended with the Zoom reaching capacity for maximum attendees. While the COVID-19 pandemic was a catalyst for change and challenges, the VCOM family created bonds in new ways and we adapted successfully during these uncertain times. I am confident in saying that our students, faculty, staff, and alumni have gone above and beyond to support one another and our community. The importance of the future of primary care in the Southeast is more significant than ever and, as individual campuses as well as on the college level, we are making a difference.

A s the COVID-19 pandemic continued, the importance of preparing globally minded, community-focused physicians is more significant than ever in history. I am proud of the ways that VCOM as a College has adapted while also assuring the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff. We kept pace, excelled in education, and provided supportive outreach. Our VCOM-Virginia faculty and students embraced opportunities and new initiatives in our communities. They participated through the Department of Health, the Medical Reserve Corps, and other outreaches. Impressively, 100% of the Class of 2024 voluntarily participated in naloxone (Narcan) training prior to their White Coat Ceremony. This student-directed program showed the heart and commitment of our students to the health and safety of their communities.

as precepting faculty or as clinical chairs on our campuses. Also, many volunteered their time and expertise as Zoom panelists, sharing their experiences navigating medical school and aspects of their practice.

VCOM-VA kicked off orientation by welcoming the Class of 2024 with a drive-thru check-in.

VCOM-Virginia’s students back for the new school year with a Welcome Back drive-thru parade. Students were given goodie bags and lunch. The student organization, Bioethics and Humanities in Medicine Committee (BAHM), collected canned goods to benefit the Montgomery County Christmas Store.

Student Services hosted a drive-thru for students to help keep spirits up. Students were given burritos and goodies bags with new masks, hand sanitizers and thermometers.

The student organization, Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS), held the event “Sprouts of Hope for Our Seniors” on the VCOM patio. The students replanted succulents into larger, more permanent pots and wrote special notes to the retirement community residents.

The Class of 2023 held the annual Cadaver Memorial Service in honor of the donors. The service honored those who donated their bodies, allowing students to learn human anatomy and prepare for their future careers as physicians.

organizations, SGA and SOMA, hosted the VCOM Harvest Festival yesterday. It was a way for the students to mingle with each other safely and enjoy a fun study break. There was a pumpkin decorating contest, pumpkin ring toss, photo-booth and fall-themed snacks.

Student Services put together a Thanksgiving Drive-Thru for the students as a send-off for their break with a special guest appearance by the Hokie Bird!

VCOM was able to raise $2,835 for the VCOM Annual Fund during Giving Tuesday. This fund is a vital part of our organization that supports initiatives like community outreach and education, scholarships, medical research, and state-of-the-art technology for academic programs.

VCOM-Virginia Class of 2021 students received their Military Match.

Sarah Lowen was chosen as VCOM-Virginia’s 2021 Student Doctor of the Year. Throughout her time at VCOM Virginia, she has always strived to ensure her fellow classmates have felt seen and heard.

HCMO and BAHM partnered to host a donation drive to Warm Hearth Village. Warm Hearth Village is a local senior living center for low-income seniors in the New River Valley. They collected 202 total personal care items (lotion, soap, deodorant, chapstick) and wrote 153-holiday cards for their residents.

Through the direction and kindness of John Linkous and Bill Price – the Toys for Tots boxes at VCOM-Virginia were filled by the Operations Department’s generosity, individual donations and a gift from VCOM.

VCOM announces new guaranteed admissions interview agreement with Indian River State College (IRSC). This makes it easier for IRSC Bachelor’s Degree in Biology students to train to be a physician.

VCOM holds Drive-Thru Gala, the MASKerade You Never Saw Coming! The event included catered meals, photo opportunities, and live music. Students, faculty and staff came out dressed in their pandemic best.

Student National Medical Association (SNMA), kicked off Black History Month with a gallery of African-American/ Black Physicians. The students were invited to learn more about prominent African American physicians who made advancements in medicine.

Reaching out to help our community fight COVID-19, VCOM’s Dr. Cathy Callahan and students assisted with the New River Health District’s vaccination efforts.

CCC’s St. Francis House Food Pantry partners with VCOM-Virginia and Student Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (SAMOPS) to provide and deliver groceries to 25 Veterans in need in Roanoke and Salem for Vittles for Vets - Radford VA.

The Class of 2024 students received their white coats at the VCOM-Virginia White Coat Ceremony on April 18th. This ceremony is a rite of passage for the students and signifies a commitment to the osteopathic profession. April

The VCOM-Virginia Class of 2021 graduated as Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine on May 7th.

Dr. Randdie-Joyce Rameau, Class of 2021, was awarded the 2021 Excellence in Public Health Award. The awards program recognizes medical students across the United States who advance public health and those who exemplify the United States Public Health Services (USPHS) mission to protect, promote, and advance the health and safety of the nation.

The Class of 2021 matched into their residencies in a virtual Match Day event due to COVID-19.

VCOM honored its graduates serving in the Armed Forces during the 2021 Military Promotion Ceremony on May 6th. The graduates in the Health Professions Scholarship Program took the oath of office and received their promotion pins.

Dr. Blaise Costa, MPharm, PhD, Associate Professor for Pharmacology,

was named VCOM-Virginia’s 2021 Researcher of the Year.

Student Services mailed out Match Day care boxes to each student to make the day feel special despite its remote nature.

Graduation Ceremony OF THE CLASS OF 2021 V COM-Virginia proudly graduated the Class of 2021 as Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine on Friday, May 8, at Lane Stadium on the campus of Virginia Tech. The ceremony was held in person with social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, following the guidelines recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The graduates, along with their families, friends, and the wider community of VCOM's faculty, staff and supporters, gathered together on location as well as virtually, with a livestream going out on YouTube from the auditorium. This poignant event recognized a special group of students who worked hard and earned their moment to be honored and celebrated.

O n May 7, 2021 VCOM-Virginia military graduates were honored at their annual promotion ceremony. Following 2020's virtual event, this year’s ceremony was held in person on campus. Classmates, friends, family members and VCOM faculty, staff and administration were in attendance as sixteen members of the Class of 2021 were promoted, representing the United States Army, Army Reserves, Navy, and Air Force.

This year’s promotion ceremony featured an invocation delivered by VCOM Chairman of the Board John Rocovich Jr, JD, LLM, and a keynote address from Kenneth P. Moritsugu, MD, MPH, FACPM, Rear Admiral, USPHS (Retired).
