AOASM American Academy of Sports Medicine

T he American Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM) allows VCOM students that are interested in sports medicine to come together and learn about the specialty. Through partnerships with local sports medicine physicians, the group gains valuable skills that will set them apart in their future careers. AOASM is also passionate about promoting the benefits of physical activity. • AOASM hosted its annual Adventure Race at Claytor Lake. The Race consists of a 3-mile run, 4-mile bike, and 1.5-mile kayak. This was a fun family event that allowed new students to meet other members and faculty. All proceeds were donated to the Bernardo Fund that sponsors VCOM students in their third-and fourth-years on international clinical rotations. • A Kickball Tournament was held by AOASM to support the Boys and Girls

Club of Southwest Virginia. Eight teams of faculty and students played in the hard- fought tournament for an afternoon of fun. • Each month, the VT Sports Medicine Department fellows gave lectures to AOASM students on a different joint of the body. In the 2017-2018 school year, the shoulder, knee, ankle, and sacrum were covered. Students learn about injuries, protocols for athletes, diagnostic skills and treatment options for specific injuries. • During the year, AOASM members shadowed and assisted the sports medicine physicians at Virgina Tech sports events including football, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, ice hockey and local high school football games. This was a unique and hands-on opportunity for VCOM students.
