VCOM - Virginia 2018 Yearbook

VCOM Focus Winners Segment 2 Theme: Educating, Empowering, and Serving 1 st Place Riley Ewen - Class of 2021

Photo Title: “The Servant’s Wall” Description: This is the wall of a

generous family that sheltered my wife and I in Northern Thailand. They slept in a humble open-air wood home but treated us with the utmost hospitality. These items are worn by hard labor and use – representing their hard labor in service to others. I often think of this kind and generous family when I think of the meaning of the word service – selfless treatment of others even though it’s not easy or convenient.

2 nd Place Riley Ewen - Class of 2021 Photo Title: “Heart of a Servant”

Description: This is my rescued dog, Scooby. Even though he’s just a dog, he has the heart of a true servant. He loves unconditionally and is incredibly loyal. Once, he saved me from a charging moose by placing himself between the moose and me. He loves the mountains. And skiing. I can load him up with a pack full of gear and he will happily trudge behind me in deep snow, always ready to chase me down the mountain. I am not the best master, but he is a good boy.

3 rd Place Leo Druker - Class of 2020 Photo Title: "Reflect”

Description: It’s important to reflect on who we are - where we came from - and why we are all pursuing our dream of being physicians - both treating their illnesses and educating them so they are able to take ownership of their own health.
