T he Virginia Rural Health Association (VRHA) at VCOM upholds the VCOM Mission by improving the health of local communities through healthcare and education. VCOM’s chapter of VRHA was the first established in the state. The group works to meet the needs of Southwest Virginia through community education and research. • VRHA held a welcome week event at the Hale YMCA Community Gardens. The community garden allows those that don’t have room to grow their own food to rent plots and have a garden. • A VRHA team was formed to participate in the annual Heart Chase event in Blacksburg. The team was thrilled to participate in such a wonderful community event and raise awareness about heart disease. VRHA Virginia Rural Health Association

• VRHA organized VCOM’s involvement in volunteering with the Montgomery County Christmas Store. This year, the Christmas Store wanted to give a candy cane to every child that came through the store ith a goal of 2000 candy canes. A group of 25 VRHA student members tied ribbons around 500 candy canes for the Christmas store to hand out to children. • The Ronald McDonald House creates a Rock-a-Tee-Shirt fundraiser every year for families whose children are receiving treatment. Purchasing and “rocking” a shirt on the day supports these families in need. VRHA advertised this event within VCOM and “rocked” the shirts to show support of the Ronald McDonald House.
