VCOM - Virginia 2018 Yearbook

APRIL

MAY

In April, VCOM’s Emergency Medicine faculty hosted Disaster Simulation Day for students. Triage practice, a vehicle extrication by local EMS, HAZMAT demonstrations and an emergency helicopter landing let students keep up close to disaster procedures. Throughout the day, students were able to play the parts of victims and doctors, as they learned critical skills for catastrophic situations.

The Health Professions Scholarship Program graduated four new officers at the Military Promotion Ceremony. On May 4, 2018, the graduates took the oath of office, received their promotion pins, and were honored for their commitment to serve in the United States Military. J. Thomas Hardy, DO, Colonel, US Army, who serves as Chief of Staff at the Dayton VA Medical Center, was the guest speaker.

VCOM-Virginia’s Commencement Ceremony took place on May 5, 2018 in Burruss Hall on Virginia Tech’s campus. One-hundred eighty-two new physicians were welcomed into the VCOM’s alumni family! Stephen Shannon, DO, President and CEO of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine gave the commencement speech.

To round-out the school year, 27 fourth-year students were inducted into VCOM’s inaugural Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS). The society recognizes students who display compassionate patient care and are role models for others. Members are now responsible for carrying out projects to promote humanism in medicine.
