HCMO Hispanic Community Medical Outreach

T he Hispanic Community Medical Outreach (HCMO) organization at VCOM works to increase the health in Hispanic communities using education and helping to make healthcare more accessible. HCMO also promotes cultural awareness and helps students to improve their Spanish language skills. The group also encourages participation in medical mission trips to Spanish speaking countries to help build skills that are usable later in students’ careers. • HCMO hosted weekly Spanish workshops. Students reviewed medical terminology in Spanish and practiced patient encounters. • HCMO collaborated with SAAO to conduct blood pressure, blood glucose screenings, OMM and nutrition education. They hosted the event twice during the year at Holy Spirit Catholic Church during their Spanish Mass.

• In October 2017, HCMO worked in conjunction with SAAO to conduct glucose and blood pressure screenings at the annual Roanoke Latino Festival. They also promoted awareness of osteopathic medicine at the event.
