ACOEP American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians

T he American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians – Emergency Medicine (ACOEP) is designed to support VCOM students that are interested in going into the field of emergency medicine. ACOEP brings students easier access to opportunities to further their knowledge in the basic procedures necessary to be successful in an emergency room setting. ACOEP gives members the opportunity to interact with osteopathic emergency physicians to gain more experience and also gives them additional resources through the national ACOEP student chapter.

■ ■ Fred Rawlins II, DO, ACOEP local chapter advisor, hosted a FAST ultrasound workshop for 20 members. The workshop initially focused on the basics of ultrasound, then honed in on specifics pertaining to an abdominal FAST exam. In addition to hosting the initial workshop, Dr. Rawlins provided additional time for members who desired more practice. ■ ■ The Virginia Tech Rescue Squad hosted a backboarding event for ACOEP members that highlighted the process, safety and efficacy of backboarding. After an interactive lecture, the Rescue Squad members gave each of the students

the opportunity to practice backboarding and to be backboarded. As a gesture of thanks Bobby McCusker,

vice-president, hosted a lecture for members of the Blacksburg Rescue Squad at their annual CE conference. ■ ■ ACOEP hosted an Airway Conference. The goal of this capstone event was to leave ACOEP members more confident in their ability to manage airways and to broaden their perspectives of airway management. ■ ■ This year Samuel Tabacchi, President, began hosting quarterly Jeopardy Nights during the first week of each (continued on next page)
