Honduras October 2016

F or VCOM’s medical missions in Honduras, VCOM has partnered with the Baxter Institute to serve families that make less than a dollar per capita per day in an area of Tegucigalpa that truly lacks resources. Together, they run the James Moody Adams (JMA) Clinic providing services like primary care, gynecology, prenatal care, child nutrition programs, pharmacy services and dentistry. The Honduran Ministry of Health, National Hospital, San Felipe Hospital and UNITEC Medical School also aid VCOM in their work in this part of the world.

Outreach Trips 2016-2017 In October 2016, VCOM second-year students, faculty and staff traveled to Tegucigalpa, Honduras for a week-long medical outreach trip. While there, the team was able to serve more than 525 patients in need of medical care. The group traveled to the nearby Jóvenes orphanage and other secluded communities in the mountainous region to set-up temporary clinics and provided medical care. For VCOM’s partner in the area, the Baxter Institute, the team held a two-day basic first aid training workshop for its seminary

students, staff and visitors. This workshop equipped young ministers with life-saving skills they will take with them to the 12 countries they will return to to have ministries. The group also worked with VCOM alumnus JJ White, DO, PhD from VCOM-Auburn on his research about the Zika virus. Patients and community members were given invaluable information about prevention and recognition of the virus.
