T he Student National Medical Association (SNMA) works to address the concerns of not just minority medical students but minority communities at large. Being an underrepresented student is not a requirement for membership, and the organization focuses heavily on creating opportunities for VCOM students to engage with minority populations through community health initiatives. ■ ■ During William G. Anderson, DO’s visit to speak at the inaugural William G. Anderson, DO Black History Month series, he dedicated a copy of his book, Autobiographies of a Black Couple of the Greatest

■ ■ SNMA hosted several events for Black History month with prizes given out for attendance. Events included a football themed dress-down day fundraiser, pizza and movie night, mini-med school for Virginia Tech students and an open-discussion lunch.

■ ■ SNMA also hosted Andrea Mickle, a former university administrator and education association administrator, is President and CEO of Minority Access, Inc. as part of the William G. Anderson Black History Month Series. Ms. Mickle talked about how she overcame many adversities while growing up, such as being the first black student in an all-white high school, as well as health issues and other societal barriers.
